Company ProfileTheken Disc, LLC founded in 2003 designs, develops and manufactures spinal arthroplasty products, such as the revolutionary eDisc™, a microelectronic artificial spinal disc replacement. In mid 2003, the State of Ohio awarded Theken Disc the Technology Action FundAward of $$713,000 helping to launch Theken Disc. By the end of 2003, Theken Disc received an additional $5.5 million from local private investors from Northeast Ohio. These funds are being used to advance the development and perform preclinical testing on the eDisc. Theken Disc’s initial development project is the eDisc. The eDisc is a 2nd generation physiologic lumbar disc replacement. eDisc’s key features are: -Theken developed polymer formulated to withstand the motions and loads of the lumbar spine. -Embedded microelectronics to reduce migration and dislodgement complications and to provide objective patient activity data to accelerate return to function and work. -Physiologic design replicates the six degrees of freedom in a natural human disc. The eDisc is 2nd generation artificial disc technology. There are fourteen patents pending. Notable development milestones achieved: 2005 – Theken successfully developed proprietary polymer in their testing facilities. The polymer is specifically formulated to endure the harsh motions and loads of the lumbar spine. 2005 - A Primate pilot implant demonstrated the load monitoring, telemetry and recharging of the microelectronics. 2006 – Cervical disc patent pending Theken Family of Companies HistoryRandy Theken (pronounced “taken”) is the founder of four orthopedic medical device companies, known as the Theken Family of Companies. Theken Spine, LLC designs, develops, manufacturers and distributes spinal fixation devices nationwide. Theken Disc, LLC designs and develops high-technology medical device products, such as a microelectronic artificial replacement spinal disc. Therics, LLC designs, develops and manufacturers a variety of synthetic bone substitute products. A master-degreed electrical and mechanical engineer, Randy Theken and his rapidly growing family of companies are making significant impact on the spinal implant industry. Mr. Theken was born and raised in Northeast Ohio. He became interested in spinal implants while conducting research for his thesis at the University of Akron. After finishing graduate school, he founded Theken Orthopaedic. Five years later, he founded Theken Spine. In mid-2003, Theken Disc was founded to specifically focus on R&D development of next generation spinal arthroplasty devices.
