AAOS 2007 Annual Meeting, San Diego, CA (February 14, 2007) Theken Spine, LLC, a leader in spinal implant systems, today announces the upcoming launches of six new products within the next six months.
They are as follows:
• Vu Mesh™ PEEK-OPTIMA® Spinal Mesh system
• Atoll™ Cervico-thoracic system
• Vu e-POD™ VBR System
• X-POD™ Expandable Corpectomy Cage
• Cannulated screw system
• BodyForm Lite Thoracic Plate
Private showings of each system will be held at the Theken booth #4910 during exhibit hours at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) being held in San Diego, CA February 14-16, 2007.
“We have a great team of engineers who are eager to prove themselves. 2007 is going to be a good year,” states Dale Davison VP of Engineering for Theken Spine. “The key differentiating feature of each system centers on our design philosophy ‘Fewer parts, fewer steps.”
The following are examples of Theken developing systems which streamline the surgical technique and/or reduce the amount of implants required to perform the procedure. Vu Mesh is the first PEEK-OPTIMA spinal mesh on the market. This system reduces the need to cut mesh to fit as is needed with titanium systems.
“The instrument set features an intuitive insertion tool that makes the procedure straightforward and quick,” explains Nick Kriska, Lead Design Engineer for Theken Spine. “We wanted as few instruments and surgical steps as possible, that’s why we eliminated the time-consuming hassle associated with cutting the mesh to size.”
The Atoll, cervico-thoracic system contains only 21 instruments. This count includes a complete set of instrumentation, plus cross connector and hook placement instruments. Eight instruments are multifunctional. For example, one instrument functions as a standard screw inserter, hook inserter, and screw removal tool. “We can do more for the surgeon in one instrument than our competitors can do with many,” states Brian Hockett, Lead Design
Engineer for Theken Spine.
“No one wants to spend precious OR time trying to find the correct tool.” Hockett continues, “Reducing the amount of instrumentation was one of my main objectives. I’m pleased with the results and look forward to
the evaluation period.”
Surgeons agree; the simpler the instrumentation and fewer implants, the easier it is on all involved in the procedure. This includes not only the surgeon, but the support staff and patient. Theken worked closely with design surgeon teams to
develop these systems.
Theken is dedicated to improving the surgical procedure by designing systems with
fewer parts and fewer surgical steps.
